Thanksgiving marked the official start to the holiday season (we hope you all had a fantastic day full of friends, family, and food) and as we all know, it’s really easy to get caught up in all of the activity that goes down this time of year. We’ve even given names to the days when consumerism is at its most insane (see: Black Friday, Cyber Monday). And it’s really easy to miss the whole point of the spirit of the season entirely.
That’s why #GivingTuesday was created as a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Now in its seventh year, #GivingTuesday was the brainchild of an incredible team of people at N.Y.C.’s Belfer Center for Innovation and Social Impact, at the 92nd Street Y cultural center. The day is meant to be the official kick-off to the charitable season when many of us are thinking about what and how to give. To help celebrate #GivingTuesday in the spirit in which it was created, we’ve got a couple of ideas to get you started:
- Reach out to local charities and nonprofits to see how you can help through donations of items or by volunteering your time. Click here to search the organizations in your area
- Take an #UNSelfie and post it on your social media feeds
- Lend your skills to help those people and organizations in need. Check out Taproot+ to search for pro bono opportunities to suit your professional experience
- Engage in random acts of kindness in your community, whether it’s surprising someone with a note of encouragement, dropping some extra change into an almost-expired parking meter, or bringing in treats to share with your co-workers
