Hashtag Holiday: National Donut Day

Anyone who saw me throw down three donuts in record time on GMA Strahan & Sara recently (a minute before I committed myself to JLo and A-Rod’s no sugar, no carbs challenge) knows how much I love a good donut. (I have a really hard time saying no to a warm Krispy Kreme.) So, in honor of today’s Hashtag Holiday, National Donut Day, we did some delicious research and came up with a list of some of the best donut shops across the country.

Union Square Donuts: This award-winning bakery has outposts in Boston, Brookline, and Somerville, Massachusetts, and makes its donuts from a brioche dough (which makes them super light and airy) by hand every day. The one to munch: The melt-in-your-mouth Brown Butter Hazelnut Crunch.

Donut Bar: This San Diego and Las Vegas-based donut emporium (with more locations on the way) has a very loyal following (including celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres) and gets really creative with its creations. The one to munch: The Big Poppa Tart Donut, a deliciously soft giant donut stuffed with an actual Pop Tart (only 120 of these are made each day).

Federal Donuts: The menu at this Philadelphia hot spot is stripped down to just three items that they do and do really well: donuts, fried chicken, and coffee. Started by two James Beard Award-winning restaurateurs, Federal’s claim to fame is their classic “Hot, Fresh” and modern “Fancy” donuts. The one to munch: The Cookies and Cream “Hot, Fresh” and the Cereal Glaze “Fancy” donuts.

Doughnut Vault: Once this Chicago sweet shop runs out of donuts, it’s closed for the day—so you better get in line early to sample one of its delicious donuts which are rumored to not only be the best in the city but in the country, too. The one to munch: If you’re looking for a classic, the Old-Fashioned is for you; or if you feel like going off book, try one of the more unique flavors, like Dulce De Leche Cake.

Doughnut Plant: Everything from the jams and fillings to the glazes and dough is made fresh and without preservatives on the daily at this New York City bakery. The one to munch: It’s a toss-up between the square-shape, coconut-cream-filled Coconut Cream and Manhattan Cream (dipped in Valrhona chocolate donuts.
