In the Zone: Get Your Grill On

As the famous Beatles song goes, it was a long, cold, lonely winter and now … here comes the sun! We are all fired up for Memorial Day and celebrating the first “official” weekend of summer—so if you haven’t fired up your grill yet, now’s the time to get cooking. Nothing says all-American summer more than hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, steak (well, pretty much any kind of meat) cooked over an open flame and paired with an ice-cold beer.

To give you a hand with your backyard barbecue this weekend, we came up with a hit list of all of our favorite summertime recipes, so you can really get your grill on. Here’s our menu for a memorable Memorial Day blowout:

The Apps: The Barefoot Contessa’s crazy good Guacamole, my pal Michael Symon’s Spicy Deviled Eggs, and this cucumber- and tomato-topped hummus from Smitten Kitchen are tough to beat.

The Sides: Again, not a whole lot can beat The Barefoot Contessa and her Old-fashioned Potato Salad. Also, why should the meat have all the grill fun? Bobby Flay’s Grilled Corn with Piquillo Pepper Butter and Spoon Fork Bacon’s Grilled Avocado and Gem Salad are perfect side dishes for an early summer dinner.

The Main Event: No one does it better than Bobby Flay with his Perfect Burger, and Chowhound’s got the rest of the ‘cue covered with Easy BBQ Baby Back Pork Ribs and Tangy Bourbon Barbecue Chicken. For the non-meat eaters in the group, Michael Symon’s Salmon with Rosemary and Garlic is delicious.

The Desserts: Of course, Mama Strahan’s famous Butter Cake with Chocolate Frosting is at the top of my sweet treats list, but so are Kelly Banks’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownie, and this Southern Peach Crumble from Food 52.
