I first learned about Mary Poppins Returns when I sat down with actor and the mastermind behind Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, on Good Morning America. Miranda shared how he spent eight months in London filming this sequel to the 1964 classic Mary Poppins. He was a big fan of the original, so the importance of making this movie was not lost on him. This guy is so incredibly talented: He’s already got a Pulitzer, an Emmy, three Tonys, and three Grammys under his belt, and Oscar might come calling this awards season, too. And he’s got the biggest heart, too. (Check out some of the work he’s done to help relief efforts in Puerto Rico.)
All of this makes me even more excited to see Mary Poppins Returns with my family when it hits theaters today. The new, original musical picks up 25 years after the original film: With a little help from friends including street-lamplighter Jack (Miranda), the “practically perfect in every way” Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) returns to help the Banks family find the joy, wonder, and magic missing from their lives after a devastating loss. Directed by Rob Marshall, it’s a heartwarming story filled with toe-tapping music and incredible performances—just the thing to get everyone into the holiday spirit.
