On the Agenda: National Bike to Work Day

My very first bike was a thing of beauty: a BMX Kuwahara Laserlitethat I worked my tail off to earn(you can read about how I did it here). The bike is pretty special to me, not only because it was basically the coolest thing a ten-year-old like me could ever hope to call his own, but also because it signified a wonderful kind of freedom: I had two wheels that could take me pretty much wherever I wanted to go at a moment’s notice. I love that bike so much that it now hangs on the wall of my man cave, Strayland, in a place of honor.

Unfortunately, the Kuwi is a little too small for me to ride now, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to get my bike-ride on this National Bike to Work Day (it’s worth mentioning that May is National Bike Month, too). Sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, National Bike to Work Day is celebrated in communities all over the country and encourages people to park their cars and take two wheels to work or school instead. You know how much I love some cool gear, so I picked out a couple of things that will make your biking adventure a little more stylish.

A great bike: Picking out a bike is like choosing the perfect pair of shoes—it’s not a one size fits all situation. If you’re looking for more of an easy, “around town” cycle, the Schwinn Discover Hybrid Bicycle offers 21 speeds, a twist shifter, and a rear derailleur. I also like the utilitarian look of the Haro Beasley 27.5, which has two-inch tires that are great for traveling over more urban terrain.

A safe helmet: With its patented Active Air system, the Annex Helmet by Bell not only looks cool it actually helps your head stay cool. There’s a built-in sliding vent that can open up and quickly shut whenever you need a blast of air. (I really like the look of the helmet in Tactical Matte-Gloss Green.)

A functional backpack:Whatever you need to bring with you for the day, the Rhake Backpack by Mission Workshop has it covered, literally. The whole thing is water resistant and offers a convertible top that you can either roll down or flap down depending on which look you like best.

A breathable outfit:If you plan on taking a bike to work, you’re going to want to make sure that you’ve got on clothes that you can move freely in and are appropriate for the office, too. The new MSX by Michael Strahan Spring 2019 Collection is full of great pieces—like the Striped Performance Crew and Polo, and the Tapered Pant—that will take you from the pedal to your place of business in no time.
